Apple's New Marketing Trick

Spatial Computing

"I want to take you on a journey into the fascinating realm of Spatial Computing, a frontier where the physical and digital worlds converge to redefine how we perceive and interact with our environment." That quote could come directly from Apple's new TV Spot. Storytelling and all.
However, is Spatial Computing really new or does Apple recycle an existing technology using a modern branding strategy?
AR, VR, MR...etc
At its core, Spatial Computing is said to be about understanding and manipulating space, about imbuing the digital realm with an awareness of our physical surroundings and vice versa. It's supposed to be a paradigm shift that transforms our devices from mere tools into intelligent companions that perceive and respond to the context in which they exist. Ok but what is the difference with Augmented, Virtual and Mixed Reality?
Augmented Reality is where we augment our reality with digital overlays. It's not just about catching virtual creatures in a game; it's about enhancing how we learn, work, and play by seamlessly integrating digital information into our everyday lives.
Virtual Reality, on the other hand, transports us to entirely new worlds, immersing us in experiences that were once confined to our imagination. Apple says that Spatial Computing takes VR a step further by exploring how these virtual realms can intelligently interact with the physical space around us, creating immersive, personalized environments tailored to our needs.
Now, let's talk about Mixed Reality, the sweet spot where the digital and physical coexist and interact in real-time. Picture this: Digital characters seamlessly interacting with your surroundings or virtual objects responding to your physical gestures. It's a playground where imagination meets reality, and the possibilities are boundless.
Spatial Computing vs Mixed Reality?
Based on what we just said previously, what would then be the difference between Spatial Computing and Mixed Reality? Some people see a distinction between the two, although the terms are related and often used interchangeably:
Spatial Computing is a broader concept that encompasses a range of technologies and approaches aimed at improving the interaction between the digital and physical worlds. It focuses on the understanding and utilization of physical space, utilizing technologies like computer vision, sensors, and other hardware to create a more seamless integration between the digital and physical realms. It extends beyond the immersive experiences associated with augmented and virtual reality, incorporating the overall enhancement of spatial awareness and interaction in both digital and physical environments.
Mixed Reality (MR), on the other hand, specifically refers to the merging of digital and physical worlds to create a unified environment where both coexist and interact in real-time. MR is often considered a spectrum that includes both augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR).
I am willing to understand that Spatial Computing is a broader term that encompasses various technologies aiming to improve the understanding and interaction with physical space, providing a conceptual framework, while Mixed Reality represents a specific application or implementation within that framework.
Neverless, I personaly think it is more a communication trick to create a sense of appropriation by Apple than a real technical revolution. What do you think?
